Inside Meow Wolf’s Real Unreal
If you find yourself near the Dallas-Fortworth area in Texas, and you have a penchant for the bizarre, you may find yourself drawn to Meow Wolf’s Real Unreal location in Grapevine.
This was our fourth Meow Wolf, so we knew what we were getting ourselves into. I had grown used to the creatures and the almost alien-like worlds that lurk beyond the facade. What I wasn’t expecting was the heavy handed dejavu that accompanied this dose of vivid insanity.
We realized, to our disappointment, that the Real-unreal was very similar to the original location in Santa fe, called The House of Eternal Return.
The experience starts off in a normal looking house. theres a living room, a kitchen, bedrooms, etc. There are photos of a ficticious family on the wall, there are letters and news papers and computers— All curated for you to explore and uncover clues about who lives there. You soon come to find that a young boy has gone missing and over time you uncover that he some how ended up in an alternate reality and saw a lot of monsters along the way.
Not only is this storyline is very similar to House of Eternal Return, but some of the rooms we saw later in the exhibit were direct copies! It felt like a missed opportunity to continue to explore other themes or stories that weren’t so similar.
In the end, we still enjoyed looking around, but spent much less time here than we had at House of Eternal Return, Omega mart, or the Real unreal.
Nearly identical from the one we saw in Santa Fe :(
If you’ve been to House of Eternal Return, and you don’t live in the Dallas area, I would say you can skip this one.
